I, also, have never liked that term.  I played around with the "first milk"
and "second milk" idea for a while, but didn't really think it fit the bill.
What I eventually would up saying was that milk volume is small the first
few days, but it is all the baby needs.  It is a kindness to the baby that
it isn't flowing "fast and furious" at first, so that baby can practice and
learn on the low flow.  Then after a few days, the milk volume "kicks into
high gear" as baby becomes more adept at nursing and begins to actually need
the larger amounts.



One of the insidious effects of having bottles around and visible on the OB
units is that moms look at the bottle and immediately thinks, "I know I
don't have that much!"  She doesn't know how much winds up being thrown away
either because baby won't take it, or takes it and soon gives back a
"refund"!
