Dear Fay

I only wanted to point out that the hospital may not be disrespecting IBCLCs
with no RN credential - it might be based on other factors.

If a union is a factor and it represents nurses, then it will negotiate for
nurses. Its mandate is to protect the jobs for nurses. My comment had
nothing to do with IBLCE - it was not a blanket statement that IBCLCs cannot
belong to a union.

Yes, I can see that anyone can get CPR-certified. If I were the nursing
unit manager and had enough RN/IBCLCs, then I would probably post for RNs to
fill the position because I would then have extra RN staff on the floor.

There are hospitals with only RN staff - no RPN or LPN staff. Do you think
that they should not be allowed to specify only RN staff?

You have not addressed the fact that IBCLCs are not a recognized profession
in my province - this factor is probably most relevant. You have also not
addressed the possibility that the hospitals' accreditation or insurance is
based on credential requirements.

Are there any non-RN IBCLCs working in hospitals in my province? Yes, there
are and I do not disagree with such positions.

I wanted to point out to Lactnetters who only saw prejudice and
discrimination, that there might be other factors. I am also writing with
an "overall" in mind, and you have written back with one personal, specific
case.

I would also like to mention that I am an RN, but I was a La Leche League
Leader for several years before I became an RN - I wrote my IBLCE
certification based on my years as a LLLC Leader. Do I think all RN/IBCLCs
are superior to non-RN/IBCLCs? No, I do not.

Subject: RN IBCLC or Non-RN IBCLC

Thanks for your insight, Joy.

In response to your post, I think it would be totally appropriate for
hospital-based-non-RN-IBCLCs to be required to have CPR (I am required to
have it as a employee of Sea Mar Community Health Centers which manages our
local WIC agency and more). Also, in a hospital, surely there are RNs
available in case of a nursing emergency? I don't think that this is reason
to not employee non-RN IBCLCs.

As for your mention that IBCLCs cannot belong to the union - you've got me
anxious now! I am an IBCLC and I belong to a union. Did I miss something -
is this not permitted by IBLCE and I just didn't realize it, or is this just
your particular union rule, or .???

Thanks,

Fay
