I am wondering if anyone has had experience with nurses being allergic to
the HMF powder used to supplement nutrition in breastmilk for the premature
infant. On our unit, we have 3 nurses who have allergic reactions to the
powder itself. When they open a packet they get respiratory symptoms and
hives. One of the nurses had allergy testing with a specialist and reacted
to nothing except the HMF powder. I am concerned that this could be a issue
we will have to deal with more as more nurses are exposed. Also we send
some infants home on this and the mothers don't usually mix it here, so we
would not know they had a allergy, and if the mix it near a compromised
baby ie: with chronic lung disease, could this cause more distress? Any
information you might have would be appreciated. Thanks Sharon
