VERY pragmatic reason. Staffing. They can pull an RN IBCLC to L&D, NICU,
Mother-Baby -- wherever the need is, and wherever her particular expertise
in Maternal Child Health lies. To administrations way of thinking, they
get two for the price of one, and have an extra "on call" person to pull
if needed. A crisis in L&D of low staffing will always supercede lactation

This reminds me of when I first started interviewing for jobs - long before
I was remotely interested in breastfeeding. No matter what position I
applied for, I was ALWAYS asked if I could type. And when I said no, that
the academic track in my school did not include typing, they looked at me
with utter bewilderment. Didn't ALL girls learn to type?

So I began to ask my male counterparts if THEY had been asked that
question, and THEY looked at me in bewilderment! "Why would WE be asked if
we could type? Guys don't do that! Besides, it isn't part of our job
description."
I 'll bet they were never asked to get the boss a cup of coffee, either!

So, do you see where I am going here? Nowhere in the Core Curriculum does
it mention that IBCLCs need to be RNs, or typists, for that matter. Are
lab technicians RNs? Are hospital social workers RNs? It is time we stood
up for ourselves and proclaimed that we are specialists to whom others
refer, not an extra pair of hands which can be pulled from their own work
at whim.

Aux armes, citoyennes!
