Valerie,

Your statement below sparked a thought and would like to get feedback from
you and others as to whether this might be the cause of babies on formula having
stooling difficulties when also receiving some breastmilk.

"These were the cases where moms who were breastfeeding and using infant
formula would state that the babies were perfectly fine when they were given
infant formula. But after breastfeeding they seemed to be quite miserable, crying,
seeming to be in pain. "

Could it be that when baby's intestine is used to formula "clogging the
pipes," so to speak, that when he has breastmilk the intestines are more motile and
function normally? And then this may cause cramping/gas because the gut is
not used to "responding" to breastmilk. Is this at all a possibility or is my
understanding of intestinal function too simplistic?

I don't think this is what you were explaining, Valerie, but just what popped
into my head as I read your above observation (I'm one of posters who brought
up what a pedi said about breastmilk and formula together causing stooling
difficulties). I don't quite understand what you were trying to explain but am
trying to make the connection between substances added to formula interfering
with infant's response to breastmilk.
