What a terific idea! We will have to try to see if we can do it
that way. How about pacifiers also? Come to think of it, even
formula! Then in those cases where a doc's personal order set
states "call me before using supplement with a breastfed baby", the
nurse won't be able to ignore that order.
For those that don't know-Pyxis is a "medication vending machine"
where the nurses get meds for the patients. Originally we just used
it for controlled substances, but now all individual meds are also
dispensed this way. It automatically charts the time and reason for
the med. A reminder to chart the outcome is generated, it lets you
know the last time the med was given (I think if you are removing a
med before the prescribed interval has passed, you have to justify
it). If a med isn't in the doc's or the department orders, you
can't get it. Things like syringes and needles are also dispensed,
although it doesn'e have to be specifically ordered. It does record
who removed it and for whom.

Winnie
