Discussions of sore nipples, made me reflect on another reason for sore
nipples that I have never seen discussed anywhere. Although that
doesn't mean its not in some book, journal, etc. My last baby who was
born at home caused me to have sore nipples. It wasn't til she was a
toddler and she gave me this huge toothy grin that I realized that her
lower teeth overlapped her upper teeth. Her mandible protruded
substantially. I then understood why it had been necessary for me to
use a Danner hold to stabilize the jaw along with counter-pressure. It
was the only way I could be comfortable nursing. I believe that in some
cases this may be what we are witnessing when everything else seems
right(positioning, frenulum, etc.) Interestingly, by the time she was
5, her lower and upper teeth began to meet more normally(all that long
term nursing and growth of the jaw I suppose) But just thought I'd throw
that out as another reason for sore nipples. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
