if the mom is trying to add specific fatty acids or the DHA with the fish oil and is looking for an alternative, you can also suggest flax seed oil which also or  evening primrose oil which are both what vegetarians lean towards for fatty oil supplementation.  
As far as the fish oil capsules are concerned, the oil is a concentrate and is usually pretty processed and refined. I have not heard of a risk of any mercury levels with the OTC caps.  Although the caps DO smell!
