I can't find the original reference where H. Cloake advocates a 10mm gap for the bottom boards. However, going back into the archives I found this

They say to use the 3/4 inch space in the summer for better ventilation and the 3/8 inch space in winter.  Is there any scientific evidence showing that the 3/4 inch space is needed? Like I said, I simply use the 3/8 inch side year round. I agree, it is adequate for air flow and blocks mice. Even if it's only a deterrent, it's working.
