Another story about the country doctor:

He took his apprentice on a round of visits. The first place he stopped, he savagely rebuked the patient’s wife for allowing her husband to eat oysters. She confessed the fact with equal contrition and wonderment. The apprentice asked his master on their way to the next, how he knew of the oysters, and was told “by seeing the shells under the bed.”

Next day the apprentice went alone to see the same patient, and came back with open eyes and mouth. “Why, master, the fellow has been eating a horse!” “A horse! what put that into your head?” “Why, I peeped under the bed and saw a saddle and a bridle!” Thus does the common folk hint its opinion of medical diagnosis.

Dr. Pete
