I think that the problem of ventilation in a polystyrene hive, in the conditions of mild EU winters, shifted about 20 years ago, when Poland started producing Lysoň hives on a commercial scale. The hive has two pieces of couver. One, the inner couver, has circular holes approx. 10 cm in diameter, (I guess 4x or 5x) with an inner net against bee biting through and a removable textile felt through which moisture flows into the hollow space. It also has a ventilated bottom of the hive. This moisture is ventilated under different daily conditions from the hive space through openings in the second part of the outer couver from squre holes out.
