> Those darn holes in the handhold gave me so many stings in the fingers until I bought a length of dowel & a close cutoff saw

This approach has since been supplanted by COLOSS Bee Book III section 3.2.4.5.6.11, creating a standard for upper entrances when used in studies.

The hole diameter is specified at 24 - 25mm, (1 inch) and sealing of the upper entrance when not needed is accomplished with an international standard wine bottle cork (24 - 25mm in diameter, and 40mm or longer in length).

As the discussion of upper entrances has prompted me to open no less than two bottles of wine while "pouring" over the discussion in recent days, it seems a good standard to me.
