I beg to differ, it's the size of the (mouse) skull
All my BB have a "threshold", specific to that BB, stored underneath mid spring to mid fall
length to just fit, thickness to give slot 6.8-6.9mm (+0.3,-0.2), 
firmly held down with a small stick in middle
If it was to "float", then there would be no entrance
No mouse damage, this over several years
