This is a misstatement. Vitamin D does help bones absorb calcium. What
sunlight does is help the body MAKE vitamin D from precursor molecules. If
you have sufficient Vitamin D in your diet, you can live without sunlight at
all (see Inuit populations in the Arctic, for example). Vitamin D in the
diet is not further affected by sunlight.
