A young woman who gave birth at my hospital was brought in by her MIL, a
nurse, to get a breastpump on the advice of an LC she knew. Baby was almost
3 months old and had grown very well until a couple of weeks before, when he
began losing weight. Baby looked lean and hungry. MIL thought it may have
been because mom got Depoprovera a month or so earlier. Later, MIL revealed
that mom (who had had gestational diabetes) was having worrisome symptoms -
excessive thirst, blurred vision, etc. She finally convinced her to go to
the doctor, and her blood sugar was in the 800's! Needless to say, she was
admitted to the hospital immediately. Unfortunately, the whole thing of
getting used to being diabetic while being a teen mom (who had been doing
great with breastfeeding and mothering) has been so overwhelming to her that
she doesn't feel she can work on getting the breastfeeding back. Very sad.
And another thing to think of when milk supply unexpectedly plummets.
