This describes my 8 year old son.  He has Asperger's Syndrome (an autistic
spectrum disorder), ADHD and ODD and is gifted academically with some
possible learning disabilities.  He was the product of a highly medicalized
pregnancy (pre-term labor, PIH and borderline gestational diabetes) but was
born 4 weeks-early with a drug-free, very fast delivery.

He was breastfed on cue (for Andrew, though, it really was on demand :-),
slept in my bed and was virtually never left with anyone other than his
father until he started preschool.  He nursed until 19 months when he weaned
during my 2nd pregnancy.  He was not a healthy baby/toddler and we spent
HOURS at the hospital and usually saw one type of doctor or another every
week.  He very likely would have been a formula casualty.

I KNOW that if he had not been parented the way he had that things would be
very, very bad for us now.  I also know that Andrew is very clearly
hard-wired differently from the rest of the world.  He was "off" in utero.
I am extremely grateful for the gut feeling I had to parent Andrew in an
attached way.  My daughters (6 and 3)are "typical" children and have been
parented the same way.
