I just had to put in my 2 cents worth on the touching issue. I have a very
large hospital based practice ,2000 patient visits a year, and see new
mothers in group setting when their babys are 3-4 days old. I touch
everyone. When they come into the room I guide them to a chair and settle
them with a pillow ,.After weighing and examining the baby we prepare for
the breastfeeding. Before mother puts the baby into position I say "I need
to check your breasts first". I do this as my hand is going to the breast.
As I examine the breast I point out to the mother what I am feeling. " There
is some swelling here, Is it tender? Your breasts are starting to firm up do
you feel the weight of them now?. We discover knots under the armpits and
inverted or dimpled nipples and deal with everything as we go. I assist the
mother with latch as she shows me how she has been doing it. If I need to
physically intervene I do so without hesitation. Only one time have I had a
mother who didn't want to be touched. She wasn't even very keen on my
touching the baby. I finally said to her "What do you need me to do to help
you?" From that point on I moved VERY slowly, never any sudden moves that
would alarm her. by the end of the consult I had examined her breasts and
assisted her with the positioning.
If some one is being sued for "battery" I want to know is this real or
rumor.
Happy valentines day to you all from the lucky lady whose husband had yellow
tulips delivered to her office this am.
