Greetings:
I too have used this photo in training sessions for health professionals, but
never with mothers. I usually get the reaction I anticipate: disbelief, shock
and sometimes horror. I then let them know, this photo is one of the reasons I
am so passionate about breastfeeding. No baby should have to suffer like this.
Some on the list have mentioned that this photo is not the typical breastfeeding
experience of most families we see. True. But it is a human experience and no
matter who we are or where we live, we should be outraged!
The fact that we are human is after all what connects us. Issues such as race,
religion and national origin are of little consequence when it comes to the
health and well being of the world's children. Look at this list, we are all
over the globe and we are reaching out to one another to help solve difficult
situations, share our successes and help when we feel down, because it is a
difficult fight.
We give birth, breastfeed, bleed and die in the same way, whether we live in a
Pakistani village, a South African township, an American ghetto or a bustling
metropolis. It is the human experience that affect us.
I hope we can look beyond our own little corners of the world and realize that
those twins do matter to us, even if they seem remote.
