WHEN I was a Teaching Associate at a major midwest university, my son (then
age 5) was usually at the Childhood Center, but one day, they closed for
some reason I don't recall and he came with me.

He was FAR MORE DISRUPTIVE than a newborn or under 6 mo old would have
been. I placed him in the front row of the lecture hall (held 350 seats)
so I could watch him out of the corner of my eye. He persisted in asking
in a stage whisper (loud enough for the entire room to hear!) questions of
me, preceded by "Mom, I know I am not supposed to talk, BUT.... " The
class was getting a great charge out of this and laughed and that meant I
started to laugh too. Finally, one of the students came down and sat with
him while he colored in the anti-coloring coloring books that I got for him
(very PC for those times, I might add!) and he settled down. And I was
able to finish my lectures.

There were many many times when students and instructors (at various
levels) brought their babies and children with them to class. There were
NO restrictions on who could and could not be in classes or on campus.
Now, if I had been in a toxicology lab or someplace where there were
dangerous chemicals, bugs, etc., there might have been some restrictions,
but there were none that were ever voiced to me, and I was in both liberal
arts and laboratory settings.

Students told NOT to bring their babies to class need to raise a
ruckus--cite how much money that child represents as a future student at
the same university. Maybe that will help them sit up and take notice.
