Karen, I cannot address the weight gain issue related to breastfeeding, but as a Public health Nurse and Coordinator of our car seat program I hope you will mention to her that since her baby needs to remain rear facing until 1 year old and 20 pounds she needs to acquire a car seat that can be rear facing to higher weight limit. Evenflo has a car seat called the Horizon which goes to 30 pounds,  Century has one (the name escapes me) and Britax has the Roundabout . I don't know how many of you have ever thought about car seats, but when I have a mom visit me (or if I visit her) I always do a car seat check and 95% of the time there is a problem. Be sure to address this issue with her, if you don't know much about car seats there is a toll free number where she can get further information. Just email me and I will send you the number.
