Responding to Louanne McGhee who had written about two hospitals changing
their policies from complete rooming-in to mandatory 4 hour separations of
mothers and their babies.  Yes doctors are  of higher higher concern and on
the customer scale than the patients are.
And responding to Joy who asked "WHY in the world would any mother put up with
this B.S.? What about patients as consumers?" - they are the lowest on that
scale.
When a large hospital corporation took over the city hospital I worked at,
one of the vice-presidents came to smooth the transition at staff meetings.
When asked about our concern of quality customer service he responded by
saying that they have excellent customer service.  And the customers are the
Insurance companies, the suppliers, the doctors and the patients - in that
order.
I think that it is naive to consider hospitals as institutions dedicated to
the well-being of their patients.  Not that they have anything against the
welfare of people but they are money-making big businesses and the bottom line
is the most important consideration.
Sorry to be so negative but I call them as I see them.
