As this is my first posting I will introduce myself. I work for the WIC
office as their breastfeeding peer counselor. I have breastfed five
children long term and have been a la leche league leader for 11 years but
have been a breastfeeding promoter for 20 years. I am presently NOMAIL
because I can't keep up with the volume on lactnet although I love it
dearly. So please Email me privately. I need help with a mother who has
neurofibromatosis. She is eagerly breastfeeding but her baby is not gaining
weight. She has tumors all over her body including her breasts and nipples.
The baby nurses all the time but makes a clicking sound while nursing.
Mother reports no nipple soreness and positioning looks good - uses cross
craddle hold. I wasn't sure if she could milk the breast effectively with
the tumors on the nipple. These tumors are large - a good 1 to 1 1/2 inch.
At present the doc just ordered supplementing ABM 2oz after each nursing of
15 minutes per side. The baby weighed 8.1 at birth 4/19 and today weighs
7.3 has plenty of wet diapers but not very many bms. Dr. feels baby looking
malnourished. Mom has desire to nurse and is very bonded to baby. She can
pump 2oz or more after a nursing. I would appreciate all the help you can give.
