Hullo Lactnetters

Pam in Zimbabwe would like to know more about the dosage for this
drug when used to augment/induce lactation. I believe the regimen is
similar to metoclopramide's. Could anyone help please?

If anyone else is interested in knowing more about this drug, I dug
out the following reference:
"Domperidone: Secretion in breast milk and effect on puerperal
prolactin levels", GJ Hofmeyr, B van Iddekinge, JA Blott. British
Journal of O&G, February 1985, Vol. 92, pp141-144.

The authors suggest that "Domperidone may be safer than other drugs
in this group (ie: dopamine antagonists) as it does not cross the
blood-brain barrier" and that "Proper motivation and encouragement
may be effective in most patients. There may be more justification
for the use of drugs to induce lactation in unphysiological
situations such as adoptive mothers who wish to breastfeed; or for
induction of lactation after complete cessation."

Thanks, Lynn Moony, B.Cur, IBCLC.
