Several weeks ago, as I was waiting in the peds office, I happened upon
a waiting room copy of "Parenting's Baby Talk" (February 1998). One of
the cover articles is on Dr. Ferber and the book "Solve Your Child's
Sleep Problems". The article and interview didn't convince me to rush
out and buy this book, but it did convince me that many parents who are
using it are not actually READING it. One thing that interested me was
that it clearly states that the "progressive-waiting method" is for use
with babies **older than five months**. How many parents are attempting
to apply this method earlier--much earlier?? Now, of course, I have my
own opinions about this method, and this doesn't change them, but I
found this very interesting. So, apparently, even Dr. Ferber wouldn't
recommend that a two-month-old be considered as a candidate for this
method. Dr. Ferber was also very clear that it is not something that
will work for every baby or family.(Of course, how would one know this
until it had already been tried--poor things all around!)
I think it adds a bit of additional information for me to share with
mothers who bring this up.
