Lissencephaly and the related disorders of neural migration have truly
terrrible outcomes. I agree with providing comfort and warmth, but to suggest
breastmilk, or anything else, for that matter, can cure, or even improve this
infant's outcome is cruel to the parents. These infants, if fed, usually die
early of aspriation pneumonia. They are essentially infants for their entire
lives. A 50 lb, 16 yo "infant" with contractures, bedsores (despite loving
care) who is not aware of his/her surroundings is cruel. We have a similar
patient in our NICU right now. The parents have (wisely, I feel) chosen to
provide only "comfort care". The infant will die peacefully in his parents
arms in the next few days.
