Anne,
I have done some research on using fenugreek as a hosptial LC. Our hospital
pharmacy did some research and essentially came back with it being safe and no
reported problems. I asked one of our peds what he felt it fell into the
realm of "first do no harm", like suggesting natural yogurt for yeast. He
said that the real problem with herbs is that they are unregulated and you
can't always be sure of whats in them, strength, potency etc. I also
contacted Evergreen's center in Kirkland, Wa. They said when they have a
client with supply problems they suggest going to the lay literature if
they're interested in herbals, Kathleen Huggins book The Nursing Mothers
Companian, details how to use Fenugreek. This way they aren't exactly
suggesting the herb but are giving the mother a reliable resource if she
chooses to go this way. I've been taking this course. I've had a few moms
try it. With a premie....it would all depend on mom, the baby etc. Good
luck.
