Dear Lacnetters,
I have a friend who is nursing twins that are 3 1/2 mo old. She has
rectal ulcerative colitis. She sailed through her pregnancy and postpartum
by avoiding dairy products and stress management. But now has had a pretty
severe flair with bloody diarrhea, cramping etc. She went to the doctor and
was prescribed mesalamine suppositories and cort enemas. She was told that
it is not recommended that she breastfeed while using these. All of my
literature states that cort enemas are not a problem since very little is
absorbed systemically anyhow and that with the mesalamine you just need to
observe the babies that they do not get bloody bowel movements from gut
irritation of the NSAID. She is very cautious and has not taken any of them
and is living with the UC. I told her the safest one would be the cort
enemas. She is afraid the mesalamine could cause her babies Reyes Syndrome
if they get significant amounts. I thought mesalamine was more like
ibuprofen for the gut than like aspirin.
Could some one out there send me some info that I can send her or call
her with?
                                                                  Thanks,
                                                                   Cynthia S.
