Debi, I spoke to a 7th grade class recently about breastfdg and started out by
asking "What is a mammal?" When we finally got to "produces milk for their
young, I asked "What is milk?" We decided that it was a perfect food to get
young to adult feeding. I talked about the varying composition of whale's
milk (high in fat for warmth) and wolves feeding behaviors and needs.
Discussed what needs a hamster baby might have and what would happen if we
gave it the whale's milk. Then they started asking ME why on earth we would
feed a human baby cow's milk? (Hooray!) I answered that maybe we want our
babies to get the great intelligence of cows....and the discussion went from
there. It was a terrific class and I've had 2 of their mothers call me with
questions since. It is always good to have them come up with the question
themselves!! Good luck!
