Hi Lactnetters,
I had a few days away after finishing my thesis in Tweed Heads, a lovely
twin town, border of NSW & Queensland. During my visit, chatting to our
friends I was asked if I knew what could be done for a family with a
three year old who cannot eat. This is the story I've been given, and
the child has seen all the specialists going, with no real outcome.
The child was breastfed for the first three weeks. Then developed exema,
diarrhoea, and frothy stool. GP said has lactose intolerance, stop
breastfeeding, formula fed. Baby got worse, put on 'Nutromitren'formula,
took blood tests, had anaphalactic shock. Rushed to local hospital flown
to Sydney, seen by the top specialists, try hydrocortizone to assist
with swelling, more blood tests find have a very high lymph count,
throat sweels cannot swallow, have to put up an IV, taken to local
hospital often. stayed in Sydney seen the top paediatricians, all the
imminilogy tests done, no results. Has colic pain, ?mother syndrome at
first but know it has been seen by the paediatricians.Put on 'Claritine'
has a bad reaction again, cannot find anything for this child having
formula feeds, cannot eat tried but had anaphalactic shock. Now on
'Neocate' imported from UK, elemental base (I have not seen this child
at all, and I hope the spelling is correct of the products),Still has
blood in the stool, not growing much, fairly well, iron deficient, next
move, gastric tube, but afraid they will not be able to give antibiotics
for any infection due to the allergies, plastic hospital tag caused a
welt, eyes swelling up, epiglottis swelled adrenalin injection given.
Well, any ideas, Dr Newman please, anybody for this poor child, new
problem, have no others in Australia the Mother has been told.
