It has come to my attention that at least one representative of a
manufacturer of artificial baby milk has used my name (and that of Ruth
Lawrence) in a statement inferring that we a) do not disagree with and/or
b) we endorse their statements deriving from MARKETING research data
(unpublished at the time it was presented to me) in one or more public
forums.

I wish to go on PUBLIC record that
a) I was never for permission to mention my name in any way-nor would I
have given it had I been asked;
b) the market research to which they referred was presented to me (and Dr.
Lawrence Gartner) several years ago
c) I was so upset by what they presented and how they planned to use the
information that I wrote an editorial in JHL in the December 1988 issue
("Supplementation and breastfeeding duration"; pp. 155-156) relating to
their efforts. In that same issue, Professor Marsha Walton wrote an even
more pointed guest editorial ("A response to formula company research," p.
156). I urge everyone to read those editorials before concluding that I
(and others who are informed about the tactics employed by such company
representatives) in any way or at any time support the material they are
attempting to share in hospital in-services and other settings.

If anyone else has been similarly represented in presentatiions made by
these company representatives, I would very much like to hear from them
(privately). I am currently in touch with my attorney about seeking an
injunction against the company in question. It is possible that a
class-action lawsuit could be instituted if others' names have been
similarly used. I look forward to hearing from any others re: this issue.

Thank you, all!
