I've recently been enlightened by Virginia Thorley, author of "Relacation
and Induced Lacatation: what the exceptions tell us," Birth Issues, March
1997, that induced lactation is easier than we all believed for SOME women.
That is to say, some women--not given the preconception that they won't be
able to produce enough--go ahead and produce buckets of milk. This article
is worth reading, even if only as a contrast to the literature (including
the LLLI Lactation Consultant series on Relactation). The reason I say
this is that I tend to consider "exceptions" as exceptions until we can
collect enough cases to do some form of case-control epidemiologic
investigation. The small number of cases reported in so many lactation
studies forces us to use non-parametric statistics, which are no where near
as "powerful" in the statistical sense. I know we will never see a
randomized controlled trial of this, but at least larger numbers might
reduce the chance of biased selection and serendipity. Whoever passed my
first relactation posts on to Virginia, would you please pass this one on
too (since I have no idea who you are, I can't copy you directly)?TIA.
RespectfuLLLy,
Chris
