Question for Dr. Hale or Dr. Jack?
I was just contacted by a mother of a 6 day old with jaundice (bili was down
to 17 yesterday). Baby nursed great before on set of jaundice. Baby went on
lights on day 3. Mother got a pump from hospital, but was not pumping often
enough and became extremely engorged. She went to her OB and he told her he
had never seen such extreme engorgement and precribed PARLODEL, stating that
once the engorgement subsides she could then work on re-establishing the
breastfeeding. The mother took one dose of parlodel at 7:00 pm last night by
11:00 pm she noticed her vision was greatly impaired, she did not take
another dose. This am she called her OB office, got a different doctor who
told her to stop taking parlodel and call me at once. I precribed care plan
over phone to manage the engorgement. QUESTION: Her pharmacy told her not
to breastfeed for 4-5 days after this one dose because it could be harmful to
baby. She is going to pump and dump till she hears back from me. I did
reference Dr. Hale's book, it's AHL is 3 hrs, would seem safe to go ahead and
breastfeed, but I need to be sure. Is her milk safe to feed baby?
TIA
Warmly,
