Hello everyone Ive been reading my mail for almost a month and am still in
awe of the vast amount of info available on lacnet. My name is carla parry,
I am an RN at a small hospital in central FL. We have about 40 births a
month ,A level 1 nursy.I recieved my IBCLE in96.So my experince is
limited.(I also teach prenatal classes and handle the breastfeeding
reassuance line)Basicly an LC when they find it conveinent but not a true
position . it is not the administrators highest
priority. anyway... MY problem or sitiation is as follows... I was the
nurse for this pt mon. early am. 32wks complete previa bleeding LOTS > stat
c/s, acereta, hysterectomy, total volume transfusionx2.10units blood, some
tye specific some oneg 10 units plateleta and 5 ffp.lucky to be alive.Baby
tranfered to nearby NICU. The breastfeeding question came up today she
wants to but is terribly afriad of the risk of hiv transmission to her baby
d/t numerous transfusions.I know the blood supply is very safe today so
does she she is an RN also but she has this almost overwelming fear. It
does not help that we have 2 MDs managing her care that are telling her
that they personly would not take the risk.they want some info from me to
pass on to her.I belive it is ultimitly her weighing the risks of abm and
the very miniscule hiv risk .this is also the last baby she will give birth
to and the prematurity would also increase the reasons to bf. Would love
any input or documentations but several of my Lc friends tell me I wont
find documentation .Thanks so much and for the valuable info Ive recieved
from reading the posts. Ifeel privlegded to be here. You may either respond
to the list or e-mail me at [log in to unmask]
