I hope that I understood this post. Does the mom have thrush? If so, then
I'd like to relate my experiences. My original thrush experience happened
when my third child was two years old. I developed very sore itchy nipples
- the only symptom of any problem. (I knew I was not pregnant.) She had no
oral symptoms. I also had a vaginal yeast infection. My whole mouth (inside
cheeks, tongue, palate) itched and was sore. I was very sensitive to acidic
foods. Strep had been ruled out. It was also July. I received a copy of
Mothering magazine which discussed thrush and found a book on yeast by Dr.
Crook at the library. Armed with that info., I got my gynecologist to
prescribe Nystatin oral meds for me. After two 14 day courses, I got rid of
my symptoms and discomfort. I did use oral Nystatin on her for the first two
weeks just to eliminate any cross infection. We also treated my husband who
had some similar symptoms. OVer the course of the next year or so, we
adjusted diets and it seemed to help. But every once in a while, my mouth
would start to itch and we would begin tx again. She weaned around 3 yr and
we were OK. Now - cut to late 1995. In December, I began to have the itchy
sore mouth sx. My family dentist said, adults don't get oral thrush and
would not prescribe. In two weeks I couldn't even drink water because of the
pain. (Obviously no nursers in the family) No vag yeast either. Luckily our
family doctor believed me and I was started on Myclex troches and oral
Nystatin. My husband began tx as well. After 30 days of tx, we were OK.
I've also adjusted my diet again. THe payoff there was that I've lost 30
lbs. I'm relating this story because never, ever did my nursing child show
s/s of thrush - no yeast diaper rash....or any others. I've spent many hours
researching thrush and wrote up the first "Pumping Pointers" on thrush which
was published by Ameda/Egnell in 1990. (Later re-formatted into
"Breastfeeding Answers" information sheets.) I'm so pleased that there is a
wealth of information available on the topic to help other breastfeeding
moms. Thrush is a real problem and doesn't always follow the textbook
examples. As an aside, I'm trying to rebuild my information files which were
lost when our basement flooded this summer. Insurance has replaced some of
the material things, but I had 15 years of breastfeeding information filed by
subject that can never be replaced. Anyone wishing to privately discuss
sharing information can e-mail me privately or send snail mail. (e-mail to
