re: moms who seem uninterested in nursing and have difficulty adjusting to
motherhood after long infertility work-ups/treatment - I believe that many
are exhibiting an intentional detachment used as a defense against possible
pregnancy loss. Many have experienced miscarriage, or failed
technology-assisted conceptions, and find it difficult to allow themselves
to love the baby prior to birth. I've seen some women -and their husbands
- who won't buy any baby clothes or any other things for baby until after
delivery - and who worry themselves sick for the first weeks/months about
the baby's health. They are so afraid of another loss and want to protect
themselves from more grieving. They need lots - lots - of reassurance with
nursing - and are easily swayed by any health professional who suggests
that there may be an inadequate supply.
