The surgeon advised her to wean.
I worked with a mom in the summer who developed an abscess and it was
incised. The surgeon told her that she would have to wean. She was
distraught. And she didn't wean. She pumped the side with the incision and
decreased her supply on that side while totally sustaining her baby on the
"good" side. There was leakage with each mer and on a return visit to the
surgeon she was told that the incision would never heal until she totally
stopped b'feeding. After another crisis call, she continued decreasing the
milk supply in the incised side. But she continued pumping some milk. The
incision did heal--beautifully--and she returned to the surgeon to show him
the healed breast and a fully-resumed lactating breast. The incised breast
gradually built up a good supply and she is feeding both sides with no
problems. And the surgeon was educated.
There are a number of posts on abscesses and incised breasts and their
healing in good time. You can search the archives (Listserv)with "search
abscess in lactnet".
