In french, that relationship was called "freres de lait" (milk brothers,
or brothers in milk) and was seen as a very close relationship, some
special kind of brotherly. This was in the Middle ages. The son of the
milk-mother would often grow to be the special servant, or the confident,
or benefit in some way. Later in history, when the custom became to
send the child away and bring him back to his family after weaning, of
course, this relationship disappeared. Too bad...
