I don't know about the expert part but, in reply to the situation about the
baby who stopped gaining well after 2 months after a good beginning and with
an experienced mom -
This experience is very similar to mine with my first child. When the doctor
saw a 2lb. ! weight loss from 3 months to 5 months, she immediately
recommemded supplementing with ABM. She discounted the history of excellent
weight gain ( and the fact that my daughter was continuing to grow in height
and was active. There was no discussion of any alternative to ABM. No I
have no excuse for not noticing the loss myself, other than being a new mom
and just thinking she was getting taller and slimmer.
I did not supplement however. I called LLL and sobbed out my story while
the LLLL asked many questions. The most important one turned out to be "how
much is your baby using that pacifier?" It had not occurred that she was
beginning to prefer it to me. She suggested we go to bed and nurse, nurse,
nurse for the next couple of days. We did and saw a 5 oz. gain over 2 days.
The doctor was satisfied and we weighed in in another 3 days 1 full pound
heavier than ffrom the doctor's visit. Long way around to say maybe the
pacifier is the culprit. A mom with 5 other children to care for may not be
aware, as I was not, of her baby's increasing dependence on it to the
exclusion of bf. By the way my daughter did not give up the pacifier; we
just heavily regulated its use from then on.
