A mother who has been coming for several months to the LLL Group which I
lead called me today quite distraught. This 34 year old mother has a
history of gestational diabetes during her first pregnancy. That baby
is now 15 months and still nursing quite a bit, day and night. She says
that her milk is still a significant part of his diet. Mother is now 6
weeks pregnant with her 2nd. She said that she normally tends to be
hypoglycemic. Her pediatrician is OK with her 15 month old's continuing
to nurse, but she is afraid that when HER doctor finds out that she is
still nursing, he will insist that she wean in order for her to more
easily keep her blood sugar level under control. She had planned to
nurse this baby until he was ready to wean. She seems pretty
knowledgeable about her situation, tests her blood several times a day,
and is aware of what foods in her diet cause particular swings in her
blood sugar level. 15 month old has cows milk and peanut allergies. He
has picked up his frequency of nursing with her diminishing milk supply,
but she is making sure he has plenty of other food and drink available.

I welcome any wisdom that you can share with me for this mother. If you
post a response to Lactnet, please also send me a copy privately, as I'm
having trouble keeping up with Lactnet and TLC digests (TLC, The Leader
Connection, is the new name for LLLOL for any of you who weren't aware
of the change.)

TIA
