Dear Lactneters,
I want to share with you something my daughter (who is 5) said to me last
night. She was with me while I was getting undressed for bed and asked,
"Mom, did you feed me with those?" I had to reply "No, I didn't." She
looked a bit sad and asked me why not. I told her that I wish I had.
Just wanted to let you know that probably if I would have had the knowledge
and support from people like you, I would have continued. I tried with my
son. He nursed wonderfully for 2 weeks, then he wanted to eat all the time.
I didn't know that he was going through a growth spurt. I was experiencing
a little bit of postpartum depression and planning to return to work in 10
weeks (full time RN). I was leaking constantly and didn't know it would
probably eventually decrease. I felt too modest. I worried that he wasn't
getting enough. He always fussed and cried to fall asleep (even when
bottlefed, I learned). I was too overwhelmed and quit. When I had my
daughter, I just didn't want to go through all the mental anguish I had with
my son and I never even tried.
So now I grieve not ever really giving it a chance. I am so much more
informed now than I was then. Keep up the good work you do with mothers.
Hopefully their decision on how to feed their baby will be a more educated
one than mine was.
