Hi All - I am fowarding to you a copy of a letter the crying baby's father
sent me last night. They went for a consult at the Chief of the pediatric
department and he diagnosed stenosis of the anus. He opened it with his
pinky finger and instructed the parents to do this twice a day. Prior to
this I had noticed when I was able to completely relax the mother, the baby
fed and feel asleep. The baby is 6 weeks old and gaining well now. They are
moving August 15. The baby has always stooled well so I must say that I am
puzzled by the diagnosis. I would wellcome all comments. Toby PS> Materna is
the local AbM

>Hi Toby,
>
>Just a brief report on what's going on. But, first I must say that we stood
strong
>and did not give in to the twinkling temptations of materna. At one point,
Laura
>even prepared a materna bottle for the morning, but during the night she
changed her
>mind, and the bottle was trashed. What helped Laura the most was that R was
enjoying
>so much the breastfeeding. "In this tough times the breastfeeding is the
only thing that's good
>for R." she said repeatedly in the morning. Also for Laura, it is very
important.
>
>I should also say that summing our impressions, we have noticed that at no
point in time, the Drs
>in Rambam did not even suggest giving supplements, despite the concerns
about the weight gaining.
>The pressure came from "friendly soul" such as my mother, neighbours,
aunts, and even the nurses!
>The most difficult command to resist was that of our Children doctor who
was mostly
>concerned about Laura's rest and literally ordered Laura to take some rest
by using the bottle.
>
>So, here is for the report. R kept on with the usual pattern of one feeding
a day which takes
>24 hours, and with short intermissions for napping and screaming her hernia
out. This is despite, or
>even as a result of the mini finger operation that Dr. B did on her on
Saturday. We tried doing
>the same but it was very difficult to see her suffering so much. We called
B and he asked
>that we come to the emergency room today at 11:00. He repeated the
procedure but this time
>with a device used for "Mishtach Garon" (Throat culture -T.)instead of his
finger. Rotem yelled like crazy- our hearts
>missed many beats, our face were pale as clean hospital diapers but inside
we felt like dirty ones.
>
>He ordered us to do the same at home twice a day. I just finished doing so-
horrible. Dr. B attributes
>everything, the crying- the very intensive bowel movement without much
product,
>and the vomiting to this stenosis. Apparently, the waves of digested
material go down the colon
>towards the anus from inside, are broken by the stenosis and are reflected
back to generate strong
>stomach ache, intestine torture and vomiting.
>
>The breast is the only thing that calms R. She now has so much of it that
she has reached
>the level of the ancient Roman emperors: throwup to clear the way for more
food consumption.
