Hello everyone!
I wanted to re-introduce myself and ask for some assistance. My name is
Julie Miller and I'm a breastfeeding counselor in Clinton, IL.(between
Decatur and Bloomington)
Anyway, I saw a mom on Friday who was having sore nipples at 2 weeks
postpartum. I thought positioning, but she didn't have much choice in
her position at that time. She had a 4th degree episiotomy(sp) and
couldn't nurse any other way but lying down. While I was there we tried
sitting up and the reverse cradle. It seemed to work ok. Her son was
6-4 at birth and 6-12 at his one week check up, so it's just her
discomfort she needs help with. She told me she thought she was
cracked, but not bleeding.
I checked her and her nipples were fairly flat but came out nicely. She
has one of those babies who could suck on a bowling ball. Her left
nipple had a slight crack on the underneath side, but after the baby
came off it looked like she had a chunk of skin missing. Her right
nipple was slightly red, but she said it's not as painful on that
side.(when she latched him on the left there was some cringing, just a
sigh on the right.)
Sue Huml if you're listening I suggested lanolin with breast shells for
moist wound healing on her left side. I talked with her today and she
said it seemed better. I also suggested(sp) switching positions
frequently so he won't be in the same place everytime. Any other ideas?
(with the pink nipples I saw no signs of thrush in the baby)
Thanks in advance for any other ideas!!
