I also liked the differention of normal transient sore nipple with chrinic
problematic ones. At a conference I attended someone presented a survey of
LLL leaders (ceratinly well versed in positionin) 70% reported some soreness.
From personal experience by my third I was experienced and anIBCLC and had
quite a rough first few weeks with soreness ( I felt this was my revenge for
saying that proper positioning always helped). The key thing though is that
I kept trying things to improve the situation, which it did, but never
considered quitting.

Also an aside as to childbirth. All women should learn Lamaze even if they
are planning to have an epidural. It only has a 90% success rate. With my
first child it DIDN't work and I was really glad I had taken Lamaze as it got
me through a rather "unnnatural" childbirth (pubic symphysis separation,
precelampsia, etc). But yes childbirth does hurt. The key is to realize
that one does not have to be controlled by the pain but can have control
over it but a number of different methods.
