I also do not believe there is non-nutritive sucking at the breast in the
absence of pathology.  When there is no milk transfer, friction on the nipple
increases and causes skin burns and soreness.  This does not occur under
normal circumstances when infants are "lingering over desert", which is how a
local LLLL explains it to moms.
