I don't think being IBCLC makes any difference concerning income: I'm
not an LC but those I know do it for love, not money!  However, I feel
strongly that the use of "Lactation Consultant" as a title should be
legally protected for another reason: Because women who need care don't
realize that not all LCs are the same.  I'm an LLLL.  They will call me
and say "My LC told me..." and I have no way of knowing whether this LC
knew anything or not.  Maybe all IBCLCs aren't excellent, but at least I
can be sure they have some basic knowledge.  I want women to know if
they go to an LC that they are seeing a professional, not just some
nurse (sorry, no offense meant) who the doctor advertises as an LC to
get more business in his office.

As for how difficult/easy the exam is: my friends have told me it was
challenging, except for one in LLL who was very research oriented for
many years before taking it, and she just said it 'wasn't too bad'.
I hope the hours requirement stays put forever; no amount of book
knowledge (lactation degree or otherwise) can replace real life
experience.
