Cynthia posted about a problem she had been involved in concerning
disagreement between MD and LC. I agree with others that she shouldn't be
made to be the "meat in the sandwich", that it is up to the MD and LC to
sort out their differences. I was just wondering why the MD was so keen to
give ABM in a bottle anyway. I am not an MD but I would have thought human
milk would have been fairly important for this baby, considering he/she has
a bowel problem, and is most likely facing bowel surgery in the near
future. Even if there is not enough colostum/milk from mum, and ABM is
needed to combat the dehydration/lack of food, couldn't this be given by
tube, spoon or cup? Was this enough of a problem to MD to cause so much
antagonism? Or is it more to do with power? ie LC seemed to have more
influence on mum than MD - Cynthia alluded to this at the end of her post,
and it sounds likely to me.
BTW I had a client 2 weeks ago whose baby has suspected Hirschsprung's, but
bowel problem did not show up until about 4 weeks (I didn't know about this
at the time) - presented as fussy feeder, colicky and refluxy behaviour, hx
of jaundice from ABO incompatibility. At least this baby had only had human
milk, so although the bowel was "blocked", at least the stool was soft and
unformed when it was (manually by MD) finally released. I would have
thought the firmer stool from ABM would have made it worse. Please excuse
my ignorance of medical matters if I'm totally off the point here.
