To respond to the concerned father. Our local health department says that
children in families who are not on the municipal water supply (not
floridated water) do not need fluoride supplements until 3 years of age. In
Canada pediatricians recommend Vitamin D in the winter however, this is a
little controversial as the feeling is a very small area of skin needs to be
exposed to sunlight for a very brief period ie 10 minutes per day. If a
mother's diet includes foods ie milk that has vitamin D added it probably is
sufficient to meet the infants needs. Women and children who live in inner
cities and or were clothing that completely covers them such as muslems are
at greater risk for vitamin D deficiency therefore they may need
supplementation. If a mothers diet is well balanced and contains fresh
fruit she should have adequate vitamin C for her breastfed baby.
