Dear Lisa, about glucophage-metformin, it is a new drug for type 2 DM, as
you know. It does not cause as a side effect hypoglycemia, as it does not
increase insulin levels like the hydroxyureas. The biggest risk of the drug
is lactic acidosis, but according to an endocrinologist's lecture I
attended recently, the vast majority of the cases of lactic acidosis that
occurred were in those patients who were chronically ill, had renal
insufficiency, and prone to metabolic acidosis. On the other hand , it is a
new drug in this country, and it is Sat afternoon, and I am at home without
references. Although the drug's effects for which it is marketed may not
cause harm, whether it could affect a growing child in some other way, like
flurquinolones do on growing bones, I am not up on, and maybe no one is
yet. I would probably say not to get involved with saying it is ok, until
you can get the pharmacology info. Hope this helps-Anne Eglash
