Dear Lactnetters,

I dont know if you know but my first language is French.

In thinking back what we would say is
1. Donner le sein: give the breast
2. Allaiter or Allaitement: english equivalent lactating, act of giving
milk
3. Nourrir au sein: feeding at the breast
4. The last term extends to "nourrice" which is the women who cares for
the kids and usually means the wet nurse.

Just want to say that at least in Belgium and France where I lived, the
breasts are out of the closet. Every bill board and magazine not
counting the topless beaches. Everybody is comfortable looking at the
breasts and it's just part of the way we live: very open with nudity
compared to USA.
One quick story,... the first time I took my husband (south texas US
citizen, never been to Europe) for a visit to Belgium, we got out of the
subway in Brussels and I thought he was going to die of suffocation when
he saw the billboards with women naked to the waist on them. Just
reminded me how different our cultures are!!!

Back to the reality, as much as the breasts are out of the closet, their
BF rates are about the same as here in the states!!!

Maryelle
