As you pointed out, this isn't a question of the epidural's direct effects on
the baby. One of my concerns is that an epidural alters labor. It also makes
it difficult for me to access how hard the labor was. Contractions may slow
up or become weaker so then pitocin is started. Mom may not puch effectively
thus making the second stage much longer. Lowers maternal blood pressure
which lowers pacental blood flow. Shall I go on? If anyone looks at problems
with epidurals the change in the labor pattern must also be considered as a
potential side effect resulting in poor feeding.
